The Principles of Administrative Justice in a Nutshell training is a short, self-paced introduction to the key concepts of administrative justice. This training is for anyone working in or around administrative tribunals. The goal is to help you understand what administrative decision-makers do, why fairness matters, and how tribunals work under legislation.

This self-paced option is not a recorded class. It is a guided online training with short sections, knowledge checks, microlearnings, and a companion booklet to support your learning.

This training can be an excellent orientation or refresher for decision-makers, staff, investigators, and advocates.

This training helps learners to:

  • understand the role of administrative decision-makers
  • learn the basics of how tribunals and administrative law work
  • build a strong foundation using the four key fairness principles
  • get a brief look at five key areas:
    • running fair processes and hearings
    • handling evidence
    • interpreting legislation
    • making decisions
    • understanding what makes decisions clear and defensible

After this training, you will be able to:

  • describe administrative law and the different roles within it
  • apply the four key principles of fairness to improve procedural fairness
  • explain basic concepts about evidence
  • describe the modern method of interpreting legislation
  • understand the Foundation’s decision-making model and how it supports good decisions
